Second Half Pair Lifts Minutewomen Over Vermont, 3-1
September 02, 2018 | Field Hockey
McTear collects three points including game-winning goal; Louw scores twice
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Georgie McTear had a three-point day on the game-winning goal plus an assist and junior Antonet Louw had a pair of her own tallies as University of Massachusetts field hockey picked up a 3-1 win over Vermont at Moulton Winder Field on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Minutewomen to 2-2 on the season, while the Catamounts fall to 0-3.
Freshman Johanna von dem Borne made four saves to preserve the victory and UVM's Sierra Espeland had three stops on the day.
The Minutewomen struck first off of a nicely-executed penalty corner in the 18th minute. Off an insert by sophomore Lucy Cooper and stop by classmate Bailey McNamara, Louw made a beautiful drag and ripped a shot into the left side of the cage, giving UMass a 1-0 lead.
But Vermont would counter three minutes later on a corner of its own. Carla Godsman inserted directly to Rachel Phillips and after her shot was knocked away, Pleun Haantjes put home the rebound through traffic.
McTear's game-winning marker in the 47th minute put Massachusetts ahead at that point by a 2-1 score. Espeland made a diving save and in an attempt to clear the circle, the ball came to McTear just beyond the circle. She dribbled back to the left edge and reversed her stick to sail the ball into the right corner.
Louw's insurance goal doubled the lead and came after the Catamounts inserted a kicking back. McTear connected with Louw, who tapped the ball past a diving Peppe Haantjes.
Not to be lost in the shuffle were multiple saves from von dem Borne to preserve the lead in the waning stages of regulation. Vermont drew two corners in the second half and von dem Borne had a strong showing in keeping the Catamounts at bay with two saves in the half.
UMass had the edge in shots, 16-7, as well as on-target attempts, 6-5. Although the Minutewomen converted their first corner attempt of the day, the Maroon and White were awarded just one more in the first half and did not draw any in the final 35 minutes.
On deck for the Minutewomen is a Fri., Sept. 7 game against UConn at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. Game time for the Youth Night contest is slated for 6 p.m.
