Kelly Marra’s Seven Goals Lead UMass Past La Salle, 17-10

AMHERST, Mass. – Kelly Marra's eight points (seven goals, one assist) and six from Haley Connaughton (two goals, four assists) led the way for the Massachusetts women's lacrosse team (6-2, 1-0) on a rainy Sunday afternoon against La Salle, 17-10.
The Minutewomen jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening four minutes of the game and never looked back, leading by no fewer than two goals the rest of the way. Eight different players found the back of the net, including multi-goal efforts from Marra, Connaughton, Olivia Muscella and Alex Finn.
Brinley Anderson made an impact on the defensive end of the field all afternoon long, collecting a team-high seven ground balls and causing four turnovers, while Lauren Hiller made 13 saves.
Massachusetts has now won each of its last five games, scoring at least 15 goals in each game.
Emily Johnston had three goals and one assist for the Explorers, while Molly Loughlin had nine saves to keep La Salle in the contest.
The UMass offense came out firing, bolting out to a 6-0 lead less than four minutes into the game, prompting an early La Salle timeout. The Explorers would recover from there, chipping the deficit down to as few as two with 4:22 remaining in the half.
Two late goals from Marra and Connaughton sent the hosts into the locker room with a 10-6 advantage, and the Minutewomen built on it from there with three straight to start the second to take a commanding lead that it would not relinquish.
Sunday was UMass' Colon Cancer Awareness Game played in honor of Kendra Muscella, mother of senior captain Olivia Muscella.
Massachusetts will be back in action on Thursday when the Minutewomen travel to Duquesne for a 1 p.m. contest.
