UMass' Carvel Named CHN Coach of the Year

The honor comes on the heels of the Minutemen capturing their first-ever Hockey East Tournament title.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey head coach Greg Carvel has been selected as the CHN 2021 Coach of the Year, the College Hockey News staff announced on Wednesday. The honor comes on the heels of the Minutemen capturing their first-ever Hockey East Tournament Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament bid.
After the loss of All-Americans John Leonard and Mitchell Chaffee to the professional ranks in the offseason, the Minutemen defied expectations in 2020-21, earning the No. 3 seed in the Hockey East Tournament and winning three games on home ice to secure the title.
The Minutemen have reached new heights under Carvel's guidance over the past five years, including four of the top-10 winningest seasons in UMass' 91-season history, the program's first National Championship game appearance, Hockey East title and Hobey Baker winner. Carvel was previously selected as the Spencer Penrose Award winner as national coach of the year and Hockey East Coach of the Year in 2019.
UMass enters the 2021 NCAA Tournament with a record of 16-5-4 as the No. 2 seed in the Bridgeport Regional and will face Lake Superior State in its first-round matchup on Friday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
