Massachusetts Downs Holy Cross, 6-2

March 24, 2021 | Baseball

Minutemen pick up first win over their in-state rival since 2010

WORCESTER, Mass. – A four-run fifth inning put Massachusetts ahead for good and the Minutemen pitching staff combined for 15 strikeouts as the squad defeated Holy Cross, 6-2, on Wednesday night at Fitton Field.

UMass, now 7-5 with the victory, ends a six-game losing streak vs. Holy Cross and earns its first win over the Crusaders since May 4, 2010. It's also the first win in Worcester over Holy Cross since 2007.

Down the lineup, center fielder Kevin Skagerlind, catcher Mike Gervasi and shortstop Chris Pearsons each contributed a pair of hits, both of which for Pearsons were doubles. Skagerlind scored twice in the win as well.

Southpaw Kevin Dow (1-2) received the win following a 2.1-inning relief appearance, where Dow struck out four against two hits and a walk. Fellow lefty Scott LeSiuer worked 3.2 innings in the start, allowing a run on two hits and one walk, fanning six along the way.

After a scoreless three-and-a-half innings, Holy Cross grabbed a 1-0 lead in its half of the fourth on an RBI single by Sam Kirkpatrick, getting through a diving Steve Luttazi at first and scoring Cam Meyer.

But the Minutemen needed little time to respond sending eight men to bat in the fifth. Michael Rounds came around with a one-out double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Pearsons' first double to level the score at one-all. Luttazi carried in the go-ahead run on a Skagerlind infield single, then insurance came from Pearsons on a wild pitch. Skagerlind later scored UMass' fourth run when a two-out error on an Eddy Hart grounder allowed the inning to continue.

The Minutemen added two more just before stretch time, on a sac fly from Hart and another wild pitch that plated third baseman Aidan Wilde. Holy Cross would get one back in the ninth, but pulled no closer as UMass came away with its third straight win.

Through the final innings, UMass was aided on the mound with a frame apiece from Spencer Bergeron, Tucker Wittman and Matt Aronson. Bergeron worked out of the seventh unharmed after runners reached scoring position, Wittman retired the Crusaders 1-2-3 in the eighth and Aronson wrapped up the contest keeping the potential tying run from coming to the plate.

Massachusetts announced a schedule update Wednesday afternoon as the Minutemen will now play at Northeastern on Friday, March 26 at 3 p.m., replacing the previously scheduled March 28 game at Earl Lorden Field. In addition to the newly-added March 26 game at Northeastern, Saturday's doubleheader at NU remains unchanged and will begin at 11 a.m.

Due to the ever-evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, game dates, times and opponents are subject to change. The best way to remain on top of schedule updates is via the official UMass baseball schedule page, as well as the team's social media accounts (@UMassBaseball).
