Setting the Scene
The Massachusetts baseball team makes the trip to Brookline, Massachusetts, to match up against Northeastern for a three-game series. The series will begin with a single game on Friday, March 26, at 3 p.m., and complete with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 27, that is set for 11 a.m.
Recap in a Minute
UMass captured its third consecutive victory when the Minutemen defeated Holy Cross, 6-2, on Wednesday evening, moving to 7-5 on the season.
Holy Cross came across the plate first to lead, 1-0, in the bottom of the fourth, but a four-run fifth inning secured a comfortable lead for UMass. Two more runs were added in the seventh for Massachusetts to increase the lead over the Crusaders. Holy Cross earned a run in the final frame but pulled no closer as UMass came away with the win. Southpaw Kevin Dow (1-2) received the win following a 2.1-inning relief appearance, where Dow struck out four against two hits and a walk.
Strength on the Mound
Massachusetts owns one of the deepest pitching staffs the program has seen in recent memory and the results of late are beginning to show. The Minutemen currently rank third in the Atlantic 10 in team earned-run average (4.35), second in hits allowed per nine innings (8.03) and second in strikeouts per nine (10.2). Jack Pawloski is also tied for the league lead with three saves.
Absent the season opener at Northeastern on March 3, the squad's ERA clocks in at 3.71.
All-Time vs. Northeastern
Northeastern holds a slim 46-45 advantage all-time over the Minutemen after taking UMass' season opener earlier this month at Friedman Diamond. The two teams first met in 1922, with the last UMass victory coming on April 19, 2017 in Beanpot action at Fenway Park, and last at Friedman Diamond on March 29, 2016.
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2021 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 138th season of competition. Twenty-two members of the team are back from the abbreviated 2020 campaign, while thirteen players are in their first season in Amherst, including seven freshmen and six transfers. A complete roster is available here.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2021 season marks the 55th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fourth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
On Deck
UMass will host Holy Cross at Earl Lorden Field for its home opener on Wednesday, March 31, for a 3 p.m. game.
Due to the ever-evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, game dates, times and opponents are subject to change. The best way to remain on top of schedule updates is via the official UMass baseball schedule page, as well as the team's social media accounts (@UMassBaseball).
