Fourth Quarter Rally Not Enough In 13-12 Men’s Lacrosse Loss

UMass erased a three-goal deficit in the final frame but ultimately fell to UAlbany
ALBANY, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse went on the road for the first time during the 2021 season and fell in tightly-contest game at No. 19-ranked UAlbany's John Fallon Field, 13-12 on Tuesday afternoon. The loss dropped Massachusetts to 2-1 overall while UAlbany improved to 3-1.
Junior attack Gabriel Procyk and graduate student attack Devin Spencer led Massachusetts with four points apiece as Procyk netted each of his points on goals while Spencer did so via assists. Freshman attack Dillon Arrant added three goals on six shots, his second consecutive hat trick, and graduate student midfielder Billy Philpott scored twice.
Graduate student midfielder Jeff Trainor and junior midfielder Kevin Tobin each scored once and dished an assist. Kevin Cutinella, Zack Hochman and Mike Tobin provided one point each as Cutinella and Hochman collected assists and Tobin scored once.
Sophomore goalie Matt Knote finished with 10 saves on the game. Hochman won 7-of-17 faceoffs with six groundballs. Rookie Caleb Hammett went 7-for-12 at the faceoff dot with four groundballs. Sophomore long-stick midfielder Jake Dulac nabbed four groundballs and caused a pair of turnovers.
Massachusetts trailed by as many as three goals in the fourth quarter before the team fought back to tie the game up late.
Down, 10-7, after UAlbany's Kyle Casey scored with 13 minutes, 55 seconds to go, Massachusetts put in three of the next four goals to move with one. Procyk started the streak when he earned his fourth of the day on a play to the left post with 13:07 remaining. Seven seconds later it was a one-goal game after Hochman won the faceoff and dished to Spencer, who in-turn sent it Arrant's way for the freshman's second goal of the day.
UAlbany sandwiched a pair of goals around Kevin Tobin's first tally of the season as the Great Danes pushed the lead back to a pair at 12-10 midway through the quarter.
However, the Massachusetts offense finally erased the deficit with less than four minutes to play. Arrant fired in his third of the game with 5:36 to go before Mike Tobin earned the equalizer. After the UMass defense forced UAlbany into one of the Great Danes' 18 turnovers on the day, Tobin raced up-field with possession, put space between himself and the trailing UAlbany defense and placed a shot out of the reach of Liam Donnelly with 3:27 left on the clock.
UAlbany earned the game-deciding goal with 1:59 to play when Chris Ryan scored on a feed from Casey. Massachusetts had one final possession with under a minute to go, but failed on a clear attempt and the Great Danes were able to run out the final 45 seconds of play.
Jakob Patterson led UAlbany with eight points on three goals and five assists. Graydon Hogg scored three times while Casey finished with two goals and two assists. Donnelly made 16 saves in the cage.
Procyk provided the early spark for Massachusetts with a pair of early goals in the opening four minutes of play. For his first, Procyk streaked across the front of the crease toward the left pipe and fired high and inside the right corner with 12:57 to go. Less than two minutes later, Hochman won a faceoff and fed Procyk at the right pipe for Procyk's second of the game.
Upperclassmen continued the scoring trend for Massachusetts through the end of the first as the team earned a man-up goal apiece from midfielders Billy Philpott and Jeff Trainor.
Trainor cut to the crease, fielded a pass from Kevin Tobin and deposited the ball into the back of the cage in one motion to bring UMass back within one of tying at the 5:40 mark. Philpott evened things at 4-all with 2:04 to go when he stepped into a 15-yard sidewinder that bested Donnelly.
The Great Danes locked up the UMass offense in the second quarter as the home side took a 6-4 lead into halftime. Knote kept Massachusetts within striking distance as the Speonk, New York, native made five saves in the frame.
The teams traded scoring possessions throughout the third frame, which resulted in a 9-7 Great Danes lead heading to the decisive quarter.
Massachusetts led in shots, 45-41 and on-target attempts, 28-23. UAlbany earned a 42-37 advantage in groundballs but turned it over more often, 18-11. Both sides went 2-for-3 during man-up situations.
Massachusetts continues its season on Tues., March 30 with a road trip to Hofstra. First faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
