Connecticut Outlasts No. 22 Massachusetts in OT, 12-11
March 07, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
STORRS, Conn. – Four goals from Kelly Marra and four points from Maddy Moloney (three goals, one assists) weren't enough as Connecticut (4-1) went on a six-goal run from the end of the first half to the midway point of the second half before Sydney Watson buried her sixth of the game in extra time to send the Huskies past No. 22 Massachusetts women's lacrosse (1-2) on Sunday at Morrone Stadium, 12-11.
Marra and Moloney led the charge offensively, joined by three points from Kaitlyn Cerasi (one goal, two assists). Lauren Hiller made 10 saves in goal.
It was a back and forth battle in the early going, with neither team leading by more than a goal through the opening 10 minutes before the Minutewomen used a 5-0 run with goals from Marra (2), Stephanie Croke, Moloney and Olivia Muscella to put the visitors up, 8-4, with 5:46 until the break.
After Watson brought the game within three before recess, it was all Connecticut out of halftime. There, UConn scored five straight to go up 10-8 with 12:45 to play.
UMass wouldn't go away, though, as the teams exchanged goals down the stretch before Moloney potted her third of the afternoon to beat Huskies goalkeeper Landyn White (13 saves) with 2:34 remaining to force overtime.
But Watson wouldn't be denied, finding the back of the net with 1:36 to go in overtime to give UConn the win.
UMass will be back in action on Wednesday when the Minutewomen host UMass Lowell at Garber Field at 2 p.m.
