Late Game Heroics Send Massachusetts Past UConn In OT, 15-14
March 13, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
Olivia Muscella scored with two seconds left in OT to lift UMass past the Huskies
AMHERST, Mass. – After erasing a two-goal deficit in the last five minutes of regulation to force extra time, the Massachusetts women's lacrosse team (3-2) completed the comeback in the final seconds of overtime to knock off Connecticut (4-2) on Sunday afternoon at Garber Field, 15-14.
After Connecticut got the best of the Minutewomen a week prior in Storrs, also in overtime, this time it was UMass coming out of top when Olivia Muscella took a feed from Fiona McGowan and whipped a backhand shot from atop the crease with her back to the cage that beat Huskies goalkeeper Landyn White (16 saves) with just two seconds left on the clock.
It was the second of two highlight-reel goals from Muscella on the afternoon. Her first of the day, which sparked the UMass comeback late, came when she shoveled a shot into the top right corner through traffic to make it 14-13 Huskies with 5:07 to go. Kaitlyn Cerasi wosuld level the game at 14 just 1:06 later with her second of the game to send it to OT, setting the table for Muscella's heroics.
It was a back and forth battle all day, with neither team leading by more than two goals at any point in a content that saw 11 ties and eight lead changes and was evenly played throughout. UMass outshot the Huskies 37-35 (31-25 shots on goal) and gobbled up 31 ground balls to UConn's 11. Limiting Connecticut's effectiveness on the draw was a key to the game, with the Huskies holding only a slight 17-14 edge.
Kelly Marra was the star on offense for most of the day for Massachusetts, finishing with five goals and two assists to keep the Minutewomen within striking distance all afternoon. She was joined by Maddy Moloney (two goals, four assists), Cerasi (two goals, one assist), Muscella (two goals) and Haley Connaughton (one goal, one assist), who all logged multi-point efforts.
Lauren Hiller got the start in goal for UMass, making 11 saves, including several big stops down the stretch.
UConn's Sydney Watson, who scored six goals against the Minutewomen a week ago, was held to three points (two goals, one assist), while Kate Shaffer had four goals to pace the Huskies.
Massachusetts will be back in action on March 24 when the Minutewomen travel to Vermont for a 3 p.m. contest.
