Women’s Lacrosse Runs Past Holy Cross, 19-8

March 21, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse

AMHERST, Mass. – The Massachusetts women's lacrosse team (4-2) received goals from 11 different players and used a 21-7 edge in draw controls to earn its third straight victory in a 19-8 win over Holy Cross (2-2) on Sunday afternoon at Garber Field.

Despite a close margin through much of the first half, the Minutewomen were in control of the game from start to finish, forcing the Crusaders into 26 turnovers on the day and collecting 21 draws to build possessions and increase its margin as the game wore on. UMass outshot Holy Cross 41-21 (36-14 shots on goal).

Haley Connaughton led the way with six points (three goals, three assists), while Kelly Marra had three goals and two assists along with a four-point afternoon from Kaitlyn Cerasi (two goals, two assists). Caitlyn Petro was dominant on the draw, recording 16 on the day, and Lauren Hiller made eight saves in goal for her fourth win of the year.

Grace Flink was the story in goal for the Crusaders, keeping the visitors in the game for much of the first half and finishing with 17 saves, while Jolie Creo had four goals on the offensive end of the field.

Holy Cross came out hot to begin the contest, taking an early 1-0 lead just 89 seconds into the game on Creo's first of the day before Cerasi answered with two in a span of 18 seconds to put UMass on top, a lead it wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way.

While Creo and Flink tried to keep the Crusaders within striking distance, the Minutewomen would use a 3-0 run with strikes from Connaughton, Marra and Alex Finn to go up 6-2 with 8:37 to go in the first half before ending with four straight goals to take a 10-4 lead into halftime.

The Minutewomen steadily increased its lead into the second half thanks to 11 Holy Cross turnovers over the final 30 minutes, highlighted by a 7-0 run over 15 minutes to go up by 10 in the final minutes of the contest.

UMass will be back in action on Wednesday when the Minutewomen travel to Vermont for a 3 p.m. matchup in Burlington.
