UMass And Rhode Island Fight To 0-0 Draw
March 11, 2021 | Women's Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. – The Massachusetts women's soccer team (1-2-1, 0-0-1) opened conference play on Thursday afternoon, battling Rhode Island (0-4-1, 0-0-1) to a scoreless draw at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
"We came out with great energy, maybe the best energy that we've had to start a game in a long time," said head coach Jason Dowiak. "I think that we got away from our specific style of play, and I think we could've made the game a lot easier for ourselves early on. But I'm really proud of our players for finding a way to continue to battle and creating those chances for us."
Neither team generated much offense in the match, with both squads finishing with nine shots apiece (three shots on goal apiece). Jenny Hipp nearly put the hosts up in the early going with a low shot that caught the right post less than two minutes in, while Rhode Island did the same off the foot of Sam Hagerty in the 14thminute.
Alyssa Chase got the start in goal for the hosts, making one save before giving way to Bella Mendoza the rest of the way. Mendoza made two saves in her first collegiate action.
It wasn't until late in the first overtime when Massachusetts nearly ended it, as Hipp flicked a ball up to Karina Groff streaking towards the cage. Groff, bothered by a defender, wasn't able to get enough on it as the ball went just left.
UMass had another chance late in the second overtime when Ella Curry sent a low ball in off a throw-in, but URI goalkeeper Faith Hutchins was there to gobble it up for one of her three saves on the day.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Sunday when UMass travels to La Salle for a 12 p.m. match in Philadelphia.
