Minutewomen Fall To VCU In Overtime, 2-1

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team's 10-match unbeaten streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field in a 2-1 loss to VCU in overtime. The Minutewomen (7-3-3 Overall, 3-1-1 Atlantic 10) attempted 11 shots on the second half and put seven on target as they found the first goal of the game in the 69th-minute.
Bella Recinos scored her second goal of the season to give UMass a 1-0 advantage with just over 20 minutes remaining, sliding a shot into the left side of goal after Karina Groff played a cross into the box to Chandler Pedolzky, who played the ball on to Recinos for the goal.
VCU equalized in the 77th-minute on a goal at the near post by Anna Bagley following a cross in by Lyndsey Gutzmer.
UMass pressed forward in the final 10 minutes of regulation, creating shot on goal opportunities for Pedolzky and Ella Curry that were saved by VCU's Grace Young. Curry finished with a game-high four shots while putting three on frame while Pedolzky put two of her three on target.
The Rams scored the game-winning goal in the 97th-minute after Emma Kershner took a crack at goal off a free kick that was saved by UMass' Bella Mendoza before a follow up shot by Lana Golob found the back of the net.
Mendoza finished with three saves in the second half while Megan Olszewski stopped four shots in the first half on nine shots faced. UMass outshot VCU 17-16 on the afternoon as both teams finished with nine shots on target.
The Minutewomen hit the road for their next Atlantic 10 match when they head to Saint Louis on Sunday, Oct. 10 for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff.
