Philoxy pours in 20 points to lead all scorers; Breen adds fourth straight double-double

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell to Rhode Island in the Mullins Center on Tuesday evening as the Rams ended the game on a 9-0 run to come away with a 48-47 win over the Minutewomen.

Destiney Philoxy led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-8 from the field and 4-of-4 from 3-point range while Sam Breen recorded her fourth consecutive double-double for the Minutewomen after finishing with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Philoxy was key in ending a UMass scoring drought in the second quarter after Rhode Island grabbed a lead with 4:02 remaining in the half. The junior guard scored on back-to-back possessions before a pair of free throws helped the Minutewomen to a 12-0 run to end the half and to a 27-16 halftime advantage.

Rhode Island closed out the final two quarters on scoring runs, trimming the UMass lead to four points to end the third quarter with a 6-0 run that saw UMass hold a 39-35 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. The Rams pulled within a point after a Catherine Cairns 3-pointer and a Marie-Paule Foppossi layup with 2:18 remaining, before an Emmanuelle Tahane layup gave Rhode Island their first lead since the second quarter.

The Minutewomen had a chance at the game-winning basket in the final eight seconds of play after forcing a Ram turnover, but could not convert on the jumper to end regulation.

Breen has now recorded four straight double-doubles on two different occasions, including from Feb. 22-March 3, 2020. Prior to Breen, Maggie Mulligan was the last Minutewoman to accomplish this feat, stringing together separate runs of eight and seven straight games during the 2016-17 season.

UMass returns to action on Fri., Jan. 8 at the Mullins Center when they play host to Davidson at 5 p.m. in the second of three straight games at home.
