THE OPENING TIP: THE MASSACHUSETTS-SAINT LOUIS PREVIEW
• UMass women's basketball returns to action on Fri., Jan. 22, beginning a weekend Atlantic 10 series at Saint Louis. This game was added to the schedule on Wed., Jan. 20 in an announcement by the A-10 office. The Sun., Jan. 24 game between the teams remains unchanged.
• Friday's game will be nationally televised on NBCSN and Sunday's contest will be available to stream on ESPN+.
• The Minutewomen last played on Fri., Jan. 15 picking up a thrilling 55-49 victory at VCU. It marked the program's first ever road win over the Rams and delivered VCU its first loss this season in conference play. UMass then had its Jan. 17 game at Richmond postponed, only to have the same outcome in a potential rematch with VCU on Jan. 17.
• Last Friday's win vaulted the Minutewomen into second place in the league standings–just one back in the loss column from league-leading Dayton. Senior Sam Breen led the way with her sixth double-double in the last seven games, finishing the night with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Sydney Taylor (15) was close behind in the scoring column, and both freshman Ber'Nyah Mayo and grad student Maddie Sims had eight points. Sims had a key presence on the glass as well with eight rebounds, and junior Destiney Philoxy was crucial at the point with six assists.
• That said, it was an absolute barn-burner of a game with double-digit runs swinging momentum back and forth. Massachusetts went on a 17-0 run in the first quarter and led by as much as 16, before VCU quickly clawed back in the second stanza. In the third period, another 11-0 stretch for the Minutewomen swelled the lead, only to see the Rams close within one possession in the final minute of regulation.
• Mayo was clutch in sealing the win from the free throw line, going 4-of-4 from the stripe in the last minute of play.
• Philoxy has been added to the team's leadership group as a captain, announced last week by head coach Tory Verdi. The Queens, N.Y. native will hold the role alongside Breen and Sims.
• Philoxy continues to position herself as one of the nation's leading ball distributors. Philoxy (7.8 apg) sits second in Division I in assists per game and has contributed eight or more dimes in seven games this season.
• Through games of Tues., Jan. 19, Massachusetts is slotted No. 58 in the NCAA's NET rankings, highest in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Boston College (53) and UConn (1) are the only New England teams that sit ahead of the Minutewomen.
