Gaudet and Mika named Hockey East’s Top Scholar-Athletes and to Hockey East Academic All-Star Team.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has set a new program record with 24 student-athletes being named to the Hockey East 2019-20 All-Academic Team, the league announced on Tuesday. The total surpassed the previous UMass record of 19 honorees, set last year, and ranked second among the 11 Hockey East member institutions. In total, a league-record 183 student-athletes earned the recognition for achieving a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher in each of the two semesters of the 2019-20 academic year.
Additionally, rising seniors Jake Gaudet and George Mika earned the prestigious honor of being named Hockey East's Top Scholar-Athlete, compiling a perfect 4.0 GPA for the season along with 13 other individuals from across the league. Gaudet and Mika also join those 13 student-athletes on the 2019-20 Hockey East Academic All-Star Team.
Jack Suter earned Distinguished Scholar status for earning a 3.0 or better in each semester of his four seasons with UMass hockey. The Minutemen also boasted five three-time honorees in Oliver Chau, Gaudet, Niko Hildenbrand, Philip Lagunov and Matt Murray, while seven earned the recognition for the second time – Anthony Del Gaizo, Marc Del Gaizo, Ty Farmer, Colin Felix, Filip Lindberg, Mika and Kolby Vegara.
UMass' first-time honorees were Alex Camarre, Jeremy Davidson, Eric Faith, Bobby Kaiser, Matthew Kessel, Cal Kiefiuk, Reed Lebster, John Leonard, Jake McLaughlin, Peyton Reeves and Bobby Trivigno.
The recognitions cap what was an equally successful 2019-20 in the classroom as it was on the ice for the Minutemen. The squad finished as a nationally-ranked top-10 team for a second year in a row and posted a 3.89 team grade-point average this spring with 16 individuals earning 4.0 GPAs.
