Caitlyn Petro records a season-high 17 draw controls for Massachusetts
STORRS, Conn. – Leading by a goal at halftime, the No. 20/19 Massachusetts women's lacrosse team (4-1) opened the second half with four of the first five goals to build up a multi-goal lead on Connecticut (4-2) and added insurance markers down the stretch to knock off the Huskies on Saturday at the Sherman Family Sports Complex, 18-14.
Kelly Marra had a game-high five goals, while Stephanie Croke added four including three in the first half alone to lead the Minutewomen. Haley Connaughton added four assists and Olivia Muscella (three goals), Kaitlyn Cerasi (two goals) and Brinley Anderson (two goals, one assists) all recorded multi-goal afternoons.
Caitlyn Petro dominated the draw controls from start to finish for the Minutewomen, ended the day with a season-high 17 for a UMass team that finished the day with a 22-12 advantage in draws. Lauren Hiller made seven saves in goal for Massachusetts.
The Minutewomen came out firing in the opening half, scoring twice in the first two minutes of the game, including a free position shot from Moloney to get UMass going early. Massachusetts would extend the advantage to 5-1 approaching the midway mark of the half with a goal from Olivia Muscella before Kelly Marra buried consecutive tallies within 39 seconds of each other.
Two goals from Croke bookended a strike from UConn's Abby Vetsch before Emma Dotsikas gave UMass its largest lead of the half at 9-3 with 10:20 to play until the break. The Huskies, though, responded with six of the final seven goals of the half, including four straight from four different scorers to close the half and trim the UMass lead 10-9 at recess.
The Massachusetts offense went back to work out of the break, scoring four of the first five goals of the first half, including a 3-0 run with tallies from Cerasi, Croke and Marra to give the visitors a 14-10 lead with 20 minutes to go.
But UConn wouldn't go away quietly, and continued to chip into the deficit throughout the second half, pulling within two with 15:35 to go on goals from Vetsch and Olivia Miles to make it 14-12 UMass.
The Minutewomen battled through, though, and found the back of the net three straight times in a four-minute span to give themselves a five-goal cushion before holding on for a 18-14 victory.
Massachusetts will remain on the road next weekend when the Minutewomen travel to Towson for a 12 p.m. start next Saturday.
