Minutemen Fall in Series Finale at Delaware State, 6-3

February 23, 2020 | Baseball

Erbe scores twice and Videtto contributes two hits, but Hornets post five-run eighth

DOVER, Del. – University of Massachusetts baseball was unable to answer a five-run eighth inning by Delaware State as the Minutemen fell, 6-3, in the series rubber game on Sunday at Soldier Field. The loss leaves the squad at 1-2 following the season-opening weekend, while the Hornets are now 2-4.

UMass loaded the bases in the top of the ninth on the strength of walks by sophomore Michael Rounds and redshirt junior Anthony Videtto, followed by a single from classmate Connor Smith to put the tying run on base. But the Minutemen were unable to equalize as a double play ended the ballgame.

Videtto went 2-for-2 with an RBI, a double and two walks out of the cleanup spot, while freshman Jordan Erbe scored twice on the day.

Erbe came across in the third with the game's first run, reaching on a throwing error and moving across the diamond via a single and a walk. Videtto then brought Erbe 90 feet home with a sacrifice fly.

Massachusetts added two more runs in the fifth frame, as Erbe hit a leadoff single up the middle and came all the way around when sophomore Steve Luttazi laced a base hit coupled with an error. With Luttazi later on third, the Minutemen swelled the lead to 3-0 after senior Nolan Kessinger grounded out.

The Hornets pulled back within two in their half of the fifth after a throwing error. A five-spot in the eighth then put Delaware State in front and brought the game to its final score.

For Delaware State, the win went to Austin Warrington (1-0). Sophomore Jack Pawloski (0-1) took the loss and the Hornets' Chandler Fitzgerald was credited with the save.

Sophomore Jack Steele started the game on the mound for the Minutemen, scattering two hits over five innings during which Steele struck out two and allowed an unearned run.

Massachusetts returns to game action with a Sat., Feb. 29 doubleheader at Navy, beginning at 1 p.m.
