Minutemen Fall in Series Opener at Navy

Massachusetts faces the Midshipmen in doubleheader on Sunday
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell in its series opener, 10-0, at Navy's Max Bishop Stadium on Saturday. The Minutemen return to action on Sun., March 1 when the sides will play a 7/9 doubleheader beginning at noon.
Redshirt sophomore Kane Medina, senior Nolan Kessinger, freshman Jordan Erbe and sophomore Steve Luttazi each contributed hits for the Minutemen. Erbe has hit safely in all four games of his collegiate career.
Navy found the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning with two runs off of RBI singles by Zach Stevens and Evan Lowery. A bases-loaded triple in the fifth off the bat of Jacob Williamson then pushed the Midshipmen lead to 5-0.
Navy went on to add two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings, along with one more in the eighth to bring the game to its final score.
The Minutemen first had a runner in scoring position in the third, when Erbe reached first on a strikeout and passed ball, but was stranded at second. In the sixth inning, Medina popped a single through the left side and reached third thanks to a Kessinger double.
Junior Sean Harney (1-1) received the loss on the mound with five innings of work in which Harney surrendered five runs on five hits and five walks. For Navy, Charlie Connolly (1-0) went seven innings in the start and struck out 11, allowing four hits.
