Massachusetts Splits Doubleheader With Delaware State

February 22, 2020 | Baseball

Videtto contributes three RBI, including two-run homer, in Game 1 win

DOVER, Del. – University of Massachusetts baseball began its 2020 season on Saturday, splitting a seven-inning doubleheader at Delaware State's Soldier Field. The sides will play a nine-inning rubber game on Sun., Feb. 23 beginning at 1 p.m.

Five different Minutemen made their collegiate debut during the doubleheader, including Ryan Coleman, Jordan Erbe, Steve Luttazi, Chris Pearsons and Jack Whorf.

Game 1
Massachusetts 6, Delaware State 3
An RBI double off the bat of redshirt junior Anthony Videtto scored Coleman in the opening frame of the game and UMass never looked back en route to the victory. Both Videtto (3-for-4) and Luttazi (2-for-2) registered multi-hit performances to help the squad to victory.

On the mound, junior Sean Harney (1-0) was the winner with four-plus innings of work, striking out three and allowing three runs (two earned) while scattering three hits and one walk. Sophomore Daniel Livnat picked up his second career save after dealing the final three innings, during which Livnat did not allow a hit.

The Hornets leveled the score at one-all via a second inning sacrifice fly before Videtto clubbed a two-run homer in the third that put the Minutemen in front, 3-1. Miguel Rivera answered with a two-run shot of his own in DSU's half of the third, but UMass claimed the lead for good in the fourth, thanks to a two-run single from Erbe that plated sophomores Michael Rounds and Christian Walsh.

In the fifth, UMass added an insurance run when Pearsons hit into a fielder's choice that scored Videtto and brought the game to its final score of 6-3.

For Delaware State, Cole Bates (0-2) took the loss on the mound.

Game 2
Delaware State 1, Massachusetts 0
A walk-off single in the seventh inning by Delaware State's Tyler Cunningham broke a scoreless tie by driving home Arthur Burrell to give the Hornets a split of the day's twin bill.

Six different Minutemen found their way into the hit column, including by way of doubles from sophomore Dylan Judd and Pearsons.

Massachusetts had chances to get onto the scoreboard, including when Pearsons reached third base in the second inning before a double play ended the threat. In the top of the seventh, the Minutemen had two on but a fly ball after a DSU pitching change wrapped up the inning.

Junior Ben Shields started the nightcap and tossed five innings of two-hit ball, striking out seven along the way and walking just one batter. Sophomore Kevin Dow (0-1) was handed the loss, while Delaware State's Chandler Fitzgerald (1-0) picked up the win in relief.
