Leonard named Player of the Week, while Jones collects Co-Rookie of the Week recognition.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey junior forward John Leonard and freshman defenseman Zac Jones have both been recognized with weekly honors following the Minutemen's weekend sweep of No. 10 Providence last weekend with Leonard earning his second Hockey East Player of the Week accolade of the season and Jones receiving a Co-Rookie of the Week nod.
Leonard finished the two-game set against the Friars with three goals and two assists and was +5 for the weekend. The Amherst native had a hand in four of five goals in Saturday's 5-1 road win, notching his first career hat trick and an assist on the power play for a career-high four point effort. In Friday's 3-1 win, he registered an assist on an insurance goal for the Minutemen.
Leonard's three goals on Saturday brought his season total to 20, making him UMass' first 20-goal scorer since Casey Wellman potted 23 in 36 games in 2009-10. He also broke the program single-season record for goals scored by a junior, surpassing UMass Hall of Famer Thomas Poeck's 17 in 2002-03. To date, Leonard ranks second in the nation in goals and currently has 27 points though 28 games.
Jones logged four assists and was +3 on the weekend and helped limit the Friars to just two goals only 37 shots over the two contests. The Glen Allen, Virginia native set up the game-winning goal in Friday's victory as the Minutemen broke a 1-1 deadlock in the third period. He then followed up with a season-best three assists in Saturday's win on the road, his second career three-point game.
UMass will be idle this weekend and returns to action on Friday, February 22, when the squad is set to travel to No. 11 UMass Lowell for a 7:15 meeting with the River Hawks.
