Minutewomen Take Down Fairfield, 71-50

White logs first collegiate double-double; Breen and Taylor add 20-plus points

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A 19-6 first half run gave Massachusetts the lead for good and the Minutewomen finished with three double-figure scorers in a 71-50 victory at Fairfield's Alumni Hall of Thursday night. UMass improves to 2-1 with the triumph, while the Stags are 0-1 following their season-opener.
Senior Sam Breen poured in a game-high 21 points on 8-of-14 from the field, followed up by sophomore Sydney Taylor with 20 points in 29 minutes of action. Freshman Makennah White came off the bench and contributed her first double-double as a Minutewoman, logging 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior Destiney Philoxy was once again atop the assists column, tying a career-high with nine dimes. Philoxy has dished out at least eight assists in all three games this season.

It was a bit of a slow start for the Maroon and White, as Fairfield built a 10-0 run after the teams traded buckets to start the contest. Regrouping out of a timeout, UMass answered and turned momentum back its way sparked by two jumpers off the hands of Breen.

A lockdown defensive effort for UMass in the second quarter held the Stags to just 3-of-14 shooting and opened the door for the Minutewomen to put together a seven point lead in the final two minutes. Taylor sent the visitors into halftime with a 28-22 lead, beating the buzzer with a right-wing trey that first appeared to rim out but eventually snuck through.
Taylor added 11 points in the third period including nine from beyond the arc, and Philoxy settled back in after halftime with four assists in the quarter. Massachusetts kept its lead north of 15 for a majority of the final frame to close out the victory, its fourth straight against a MAAC opponent.

Katie Armstrong had a double-double for Fairfield with 11 points and 17 boards in the loss.
