Dominant Team Effort Keys 82-54 Win at Bryant

November 25, 2020 | Women's Basketball

Taylor pours in career-high 24 points in first collegiate start

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball opened up the 2020-21 season with an 82-54 win at Bryant's Chace Athletic Center on Wednesday afternoon. Three Minutewomen scored in double figures, led by sophomore Sydney Taylor's career-high 24 points in her first collegiate start.

Senior Sam Breen had 18 points and 13 rebounds for her ninth career double-double, and graduate student Maddie Sims made her UMass debut with a 13-point effort. As a team, it was a 47.8% (33-of-69) performance from the field for the Minutewomen including a lights-out second quarter where the squad went 10-of-14.

Junior Destiney Philoxy handed out a game-high eight assists, one short of a career-high. Freshman Ber'Nyah Mayo made her collegiate debut starting at point guard and classmate Makennah White also appeared for the first time as a Minutewoman, contributing 18 minutes off the bench.

Massachusetts quickly took charge, opening the game on a 9-0 run and never looking back. It set the stage for a 16-point first half for Taylor, who was nearly perfect from beyond the arc in that stretch. Coupled with the strong inside presence of Breen and Sims, the Minutewomen were efficient on both ends of the floor and swelled the lead to nearly 30 as halftime approached.

Sims and Taylor spearheaded a 13-4 third quarter run that served as an early exclamation point as the Maroon and White took a commanding 64-27 lead. Bryant paused the run with a timeout, but the UMass advantage remained north of 35 for the remainder of the period. The Bulldogs would string together a run of their own down the stretch of the fourth, but the early spark for Massachusetts kept the home squad at bay and sent the Minutewomen home with the season-opening victory.

Bryant was led in the scoring column by Alana Perkins (12), while Brooke Bjelko contributed a double-double on 11 points and 13 boards. Massachusetts forced the Bulldogs into 24 turnovers, the most by an opponent since Nov. 17, 2019.

UMass dominated the paint, 48-24 and flipped Bryant's 24 turnovers into 19 points.

Massachusetts returns to action on Sun., Nov. 29 with a 2 p.m. game at ACC foe Boston College. The matchup with the Eagles at Conte Forum will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
