Massachusetts erased a 20-point deficit in the third quarter
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball rallied from 20 points down in the third quarter and took Boston College to overtime, but the Eagles pulled away in the extra session to defeat the Minutewomen, 90-82, on Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum. The setback leaves UMass at 1-1 early on the season, while the Eagles improve to 2-0.
Senior Sam Breen poured in a career-high 31 points on 13-of-19 shooting, even in seeing limited minutes after halftime while battling foul trouble. Freshman Makennah White grabbed five rebounds and junior Destiney Philoxy handed out eight assists for the second straight game, tying a career-high, before Philoxy fouled out late in regulation.
In a game that saw three ties and 12 lead changes, the Maroon and White found themselves trailing 48-28 with three minutes remaining in the second quarter. Sophomore Sydney Taylor kicked off an 18-0 UMass run bookending halftime, singlehandedly closing the deficit to 48-39 before Breen and graduate student Maddie Sims capped the run to bring the squad within two. It was a lockdown defensive effort for Massachusetts during the stretch that held the Eagles 0-for-6 shooting and forcing seven turnovers.
Redshirt junior Desiree Oliver highlighted a six-point UMass debut with a third-quarter jumper to complete the comeback at put the visitors ahead, 53-52. From that point into overtime the sides remained within two possessions and traded the lead.
Unfortunately for the Minutewomen, momentum swung back to BC in overtime as the Eagles scored the first 13 points of the frame. Mayo added a layup with 30 seconds on the clock and Breen converted an and-one just before the buzzer, bringing the game to its final score.
Massachusetts shot 44.2% (34-of-77) on the day to BC's 46% (29-of-63)
Three Eagles had double-doubles, led by Taylor Soule's 29 points and 13 boards. BC was 24-of-28 from the free throw line, in contrast to just 6-of-7 for UMass.

Oliver added a trey in the final minute of regulation to even the score at 77-all. The Minutewomen had a chance to win on their final possession, but a triple from freshman Ber'Nyah Mayo was just off the mark. It's like the lead's changing hands every trip up the floor
