BROOKLINE, Mass. – Eric Eberl found the back of the net in the 50th-minute as the UMass men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 shutout win on the road at Northeastern in the season opener on Friday afternoon. The Minutemen (1-0-0 Overall) put together a shutout defensively led by goalkeeper Marvyn Dorchin's game-high five saves on 17 shot attempts from Northeastern.
Eberl's first UMass goal capped off a rapid attack from the Minutemen as Cam Pattison headed one off the side of the net before James McPherson sent a header wide moments later. Ryan Saul and Chandler O'Dwyer assisted on the lone goal of the contest that started off an O'Dwyer free kick and a header from Saul.
The Minutemen out-shot Northeastern seven to two in the early moments of the second half as UMass finished with 10 shots in the half and 15 in the game. Eli Cronin nearly added a goal to put UMass up in the 71st-minute as the junior sent a blast from outside the box that hit the inside of the left post to stay out of the back of the net. Cronin finished with a team-high four shots while O'Dwyer and Eberl each attempted three.
Dorchin kept the shutout alive with under 10 minutes remaining, making a jumping save off a ball that deflected off a UMass defender as the Minutemen faced five shots over the final nine minutes of the win.
The Minutemen are back in action on Monday at 4 p.m. when they play host to Sacred Heart in the 2019 home opener on Rudd Field.
