DeMichiel Promoted to Associate Head Coach

July 12, 2019 | Hockey

The Minutemen’s goaltenders and PK units enjoyed record-breaking years under his guidance in 2018-19.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey head coach Greg Carvel has announced the promotion of assistant coach Jared DeMichiel to associate head coach for the Minutemen. DeMichiel, a 2010 RIT graduate and former goaltender who backstopped the Tigers to the NCAA Frozen Four, enters his fourth season at UMass in 2019-20 after two years working with Carvel at St. Lawrence.

"I am excited to announce Jared DeMichiel as associate head coach as he has earned this title by proving his coaching abilities over the last five years at the Division I level," said Carvel. "Jared was responsible for much of our success on the ice this past season by recruiting excellent young men, elevating our goaltenders' performances and managing our penalty killing unit that finished the season ranked No. 5 in the country. Jared and I have worked closely together for two different universities and built strong programs at both schools. Jared is a rising star in college hockey and we are fortunate to have him as part of our program here at UMass."

DeMichiel helped lead UMass to its most successful season in program history in 2018-19, which included a program-record 31 wins, the school's first-ever Hockey East Regular Season Championship and culminated with a National Runner-Up finish.

Under his direction, Matt Murray and Filip Lindberg became one of the top goaltending tandems in the nation in 2018-19. Murray broke Jonathan Quick's record for most wins by a UMass goaltender in a single season and was the NCAA statistical champion for goaltender winning percentage at 20-5-0 (.800).

Lindberg set a program record for single-season goals-against average (1.60) and tied a program record for single-season shutouts (4), which was first set by Murray in 2017-18. The netminder also finished his rookie campaign second in the nation in goals-against average and save percentage (.934) and fourth in winning percentage at 11-4-0 (.733).

DeMichiel coached the Minutemen's penalty kill to an 86.9 success rate, which not only ranked fifth nationally, but set a program record. UMass' stellar PK also helped the squad finish as the national leader in combined special teams (57.9%).

DeMichiel helped recruit UMass' 2017-18 freshman class that earned national recognition as one of the top recruiting classes in Division I hockey. The class lived up to its billing, leading the nation in virtually every offensive category for freshman scoring in 2017-18. Six Minutemen have been drafted since DeMichiel arrived at UMass: Cale Makar (4th overall, Colorado) and Mario Ferraro (49th overall, San Jose) in 2017, John Leonard (182nd overall, San Jose) in 2018 and Zac Jones (68th overall, New York Rangers), Marc Del Gaizo (109th overall, Nashville) and Lindberg (197th overall, Minnesota).
