Offensive Outpouring Gives UMass Rubber Game vs. Saint Louis, 17-8
April 07, 2019 | Baseball
Shapiro caps outstanding week with first career home run and finishes triple short of the cycle
Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro wrapped up a remarkable week at the plate with a 4-for-6 contribution in which Shapiro was just a triple short of hitting for the cycle. His six RBI on the day were a career-high and his three-run home run in the third inning was Shapiro's first as a Minuteman. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto also contributed his first long ball, opening the day's scoring with a two-run dinger in the first inning.
It was a productive day in the lineup top to bottom as five other UMass hitters logged at least two hits in the victory, including junior Eddy Hart (2), senior Logan Greene (2), Ryan Lever (3), Alec Norton (2) and sophomore Luke Oliphant (2). Hart drove in three runs to tie a career-high and Norton matched his single-game best scoring three times.
Two-out hitting proved crucial for the Minutemen as the squad posted its first four runs with two away. In the first inning, junior Nolan Kessinger singled with two away before Videtto homered just to the right of the Earl Lorden Field scoreboard. The following frame, Shapiro popped a single through the right side to plate Norton and a two-bagger for Hart pushed Shapiro home all the way from first base.
UMass put the game away with a five-spot in the third, helped by a two-run double for Norton and Shapiro's three-run shot to right center.
Saint Louis would chip away and got within as little as five runs before the hot Minutemen bats continued to shine. Massachusetts put up another five-run inning in its half of the sixth before wrapping up the day with two more after seventh inning stretch.
Sophomore Sean Harney went five innings for the win (2-2), recording as many strikeouts while scattering four runs on five hits and four walks. The loss went to Luke Matheny (1-3), who was responsible for five UMass runs on six hits plus a walk over two-plus innings.
The Minutemen return to Earl Lorden Field on Tues., April 9 at 3 p.m. against Northeastern, in a makeup of a previously scheduled contest that was postponed.
