Seventh Inning Surge Propels Baseball Past GW, 8-0

April 12, 2019 | Baseball

Lasko deals third career complete game shutout in series lid-lifter

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball broke a scoreless tie with an eight-run seventh inning and never looked back as the Minutemen collected an 8-0 win over George Washington Friday at Earl Lorden Field in the teams' series opener. It marked UMass' fifth victory in its last six games, third shutout this season and second consecutive triumph in a Friday night matchup.

Senior right-hander Justin Lasko (2-2) was remarkable on the mound, going the distance for his second complete game shutout of 2019 and third such performance of his career. Lasko allowed only four hits, struck out seven and walked only one batter in his outing, which saw him face only one over the minimum through four innings. In five different innings, Lasko retired the side in order.

At the plate, the Minutemen combined for 11 hits as a team, including four multi-hit performances and two multi-RBI lines. Senior Logan Greene was 3-for-4 with a walk and run scored, while junior Nolan Kessinger, redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto, and senior Alec Norton each contributed two hits apiece with Norton lacing his team-leading seventh double of the season.

Norton helped spark the scoring after seventh inning stretch, leading off with a bloop single into left center field before sophomore Luke Oliphant and redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro were each hit by a pitch. Kessinger then ripped a one-out, two-run single up the middle before Videtto's knock through the left side loaded the bases once again.

After the Colonials made a call to the bullpen, a wild pitch scored Shapiro before back-to-back four-pitch walks re-loaded the bases. Redshirt sophomore Connor Smith then laced a two-run base hit of his own ahead of Norton's two-bagger which plated Smith.

The eight-run frame marked the highest offensive output for the Minutemen in a single inning this season, all coming during a span that elapsed more than 33 minutes and saw the squad bring 12 men to bat.

GW's Keagan McGinnis (2-3) took the loss, working 0.2 innings of relief in which McGinnis was responsible for the first five Massachusetts runs.

Lasko's start was his 42nd as a Minuteman, leaving the senior three apart from Jared Freni's 45 starts (2007-10) which is currently a program record.

The sides are back at Earl Lorden Field on Sat., April 13 at 1 p.m. for the second game of the three-game series. Saturday also marks Youth Day as young baseball fans will have the opportunity to take the field with the Minutemen for the National Anthem and receive giveaways.
