Recap in a Minute
With both midweek contests cancelled, the Minutemen are coming off of a 3-1 week in which the squad picked up a Beanpot Semifinal victory at Boston College on Tues., April 2 before taking two of three from conference foe Saint Louis at Earl Lorden Field last weekend. Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro helped power UMass hitting .667 (10-for-15) over the weekend, contributing in part a walk-off single in the series opener and a 4-for-6 effort in the finale in which Shapiro was a triple short of the cycle and had a career-high six RBI. He shared Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors on Mon., April 8.
Despite a no-decision, senior Justin Lasko went six innings strong in his Sat., April 6 start, holding SLU to two runs while walking just one batter and striking out seven. Sophomore Zach Clevenger was key in setting the stage for Shapiro's walk-off heroics, inheriting a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the ninth before escaping unharmed.
All Aboard!
With the Saint Louis series in the books, Shapiro has reached base safely in all 24 Minutemen contests to open this season–extending the longest such streak since at least 1996 by a UMass player in their first year of competition. Junior Nolan Kessinger follows at 13 consecutive contests dating back to the Kennesaw State series finale on Sun., March 17.
Nine is Fine
Every player in the Massachusetts starting lineup, one through nine, recorded at least one hit in the Saint Louis rubber game victory on Sun., April 7. Together, the squad churned out 17 runs on 18 hits, both season-highs.
This was the second time this season that the Minutemen accomplished such a feat, also doing so in a win at UT Rio Grande Valley on Sun., March 10.
Goodbye Baseball!
Redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto clubbed his first career home run in the first inning of the SLU finale on April 7. Videtto slugged a 1-0 offering to left field beyond the Lorden Field scoreboard to open the day's scoring with a two-run shot. Shapiro would follow up in the third with a three-run homer, also his first as a Minuteman, to extend the UMass lead to 9-0.
Videtto at First
After a brief two-way stint in the 2018 season, Videtto has held down first base as well as the cleanup spot in all 24 games this year. Videtto, a native of Kingston, Massachusetts, checks in with a .282 batting average, third on the team, in part on the strength off five doubles and 11 RBI. He went 3-for-3 in the Dayton series finale on March 31 with two walks, two runs scored and one more driven in.
Lasko Tabbed Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week
For his efforts at Navy on Sat., March 2, senior Justin Lasko was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander scattered five hits and struck out eight Midshipmen, three short of a career-high and lowering his ERA to 0.61. His outing capped a terrific doubleheader on the part of the UMass pitching staff, as Minuteman arms worked a total of 20 innings without surrendering a run.
On Deck
UMass next prepares for a Tues., April 16 home contest vs. UConn (3 p.m.) at Earl Lorden Field before the Beanpot Championship takes the Minutemen to Fenway Park on Wed., April 17. UMass will face Harvard in the title game, which will start 45 minutes after the conclusion of the Boston College-Northeastern consolation at 2 p.m.
