Minutemen Split Doubleheader With Saint Louis

April 06, 2019 | Baseball

Shapiro caps game one comeback with walk-off single

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball split the team's doubleheader with conference rival Saint Louis on Saturday at Earl Lorden Field in the home opener for the Minutemen. Originally scheduled for a single game Saturday, the sides played two after Friday's contest was postponed due to forecasted weather.

A walk-off single by redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro capped a thrilling ninth inning comeback in game one on the afternoon in a 7-6 Massachusetts victory, before Saint Louis claimed a 9-4 decision in the night cap. The series rubber game will take place on Sun., April 7 with first pitch at noon.

Game 1
Massachusetts 7, Saint Louis 6
Down to its last out, UMass turned over the lineup to Shapiro (4-for-4) at the top with runners in scoring position and trailing 6-5. Shapiro laced the first pitch he saw into right field, bringing in seniors Ryan Lever and Alec Norton with the winning run and bringing the Minutemen out of the dugout in celebration.

Redshirt freshman Kane Medina, who entered the game as a defensive substitution, helped string together the rally effort with an RBI groundout that plated junior Nolan Kessinger, who led off the ninth with a single.

Much of the contest took on a back-and-forth nature with redshirt sophomore Connor Smith opening the day's scoring in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Smith clubbed a 1-1 offering deep to left center field, over the fence and into the trees above the 370-foot marker. It was Smith's second homer of the season. From there the teams traded runs before Saint Louis broke a 3-3 tie with a three-spot in the eighth.

Not to be lost in the shuffle was a six-inning start from senior Justin Lasko, during which Lasko allowed only two runs and scattered seven hits while striking out as many batters. Freshman Brad Collins pitched two innings out of the bullpen and sophomore Zach Clevenger entered in the ninth before ultimately picking up the win (1-1). Clevenger inherited a no-out, bases-loaded jam before immediately picking up a huge strikeout and, on his next pitch, setting up a grounder and a double play ball that ended the SLU threat harmlessly and set the stage for the UMass comeback.

Game 2
Saint Louis 9, Massachusetts 4
The Billikens jumped out to a 4-0 lead before UMass could answer as the visitors came away with the second game of the twin bill. A double play in the first inning game SLU its first run of the game before the squad padded the advantage in the fourth courtesy of a solo homer, plus a walk and hit batsman with the bases loaded.

Sophomore Luke Oliphant stepped up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, sending a double to the gap in left center field that cleared the bases and narrowed the UMass deficit to 4-3. A sac fly for Saint Louis in the sixth moved the score to 5-3 before a ground ball in the bottom half plated redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto.

That 5-4 score remained until the late innings when SLU added four insurance runs over the final two frames to pull away and secure the win.

Freshman Jack Steele (1-2) received the loss for the Minutemen, working 3.2 innings and responsible for two earned runs while striking out three.
