Palau Tallies Women's Lax Game-Winner In 16-15 Victory At Duquesne

Hannah Palau scores the game-winning goal in overtime.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - A four-goal night including the game-winner in overtime by Hannah Palau helped the UMass women's lacrosse team stay unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play with a 16-15 victory at Duquesne on Friday night. The Minutewomen have now won five straight improving to 5-0 in league play and 10-3 overall with a trip to St. Bonaventure up next on Sunday.

Along with Palau's heroics, Stephanie Croke led UMass with six points on four goals and two assists including the one to set-up the game-winner. Kiley Anderson scored three goals while adding an assist and five draw controls and Kaitlyn Cerasi had two goals and two assists. Haley Connaughton led all players with four assists to go with a goal. In cage, Lauren Hiller picked up her fourth win of the year making 12 saves including a big one just a minute into the overtime stanza.

Duquesne (6-5, 1-4 A-10) was led by Rilee Bradshaw who had a game-high six goals and Mady Curtis in goal who made 11 saves highlighted by a stop with six seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra period.

UMass by as many as seven goals in the first half, but the Dukes closed the half on a five goal run giving the Minutewomen a 9-7 lead at the intermission.

The pressure kept up in the second half with the home squad scoring four more times coming out of the break giving Duquesne a 11-9 lead at the 25:08 mark.

After the two teams then traded goals, Palau and Croke each scored to tie the game 12-12 with 10:46 to go. The score went back-and-forth over the next nine minutes until Connaughton put UMass up 15-14 with 90 seconds remaining. Bradshaw answered for the Dukes to tie the game again just 40 seconds later, but the Minutewomen had one last chance as regulation began drawing to a close.

Croke won the ensuing draw control allowing UMass to set-up its offense. The junior midfielder let off a shot with six seconds left, but Curtis made the save to force overtime.

In the overtime, Duquesne won the opening draw setting up a shot by Michaela Connolly that was saved by Hiller. UMass turned the ball over on the clear attempt, but Ally Murphy was able to get the ball back on a caused turnover allowing the Minutewomen to call timeout. With 19 seconds left in the first half of the overtime, Croke found Palau for the tally to end the game.

Overall, the Dukes held a 36-to-32 shot advantage that was paced by 25 UMass turnovers while Duquesne had 16 miscues.
