Fourteen Minutemen notch at least one point; Meyers and Green control possession in win

NEWARK, N.J. – Fourteen Minutemen had at least one point, Sean Sconone made 10 saves and the defense held NJIT scoreless for 21 minutes, 35 seconds as the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team downed the Highlanders, 19-7 at Rutgers-Newark's Alumni Field on Saturday.

Sophomore attack Chris Connolly led Massachusetts (3-3 overall) with six points on a goal and five assists. Freshman attack Gabriel Procyk added five points on as many goals while junior attack Devin Spencer scored three times.

Sophomore midfielder Kevin Tobin and junior position-mate Jeff Trainor added two goals and an assist each. Eight additional players had a point, including the first collegiate goals for freshmen Matt Baugher, Jack Geiger, Tim Hoynes and Alex Shuster, and first assist for senior Nick Roy.

Senior goalie Sean Sconone had 10 saves in the win. Connolly, Isaac Paparo, Jackson Suboch and Tobin all had two caused turnovers.

Massachusetts controlled the faceoff dot en route to a combined 23-for-30 showing (.766) from senior Tom Meyers (13-for-16; 12 groundballs) and sophomore Tyler Green (10-of-14; seven groundballs).

Ryan Darrow led NJIT with three goals while Aaron Forster had two goals and as many assists. Alexzander Hunt made 21 saves in net for the Highlanders.

The Maroon and White scored the first goal of the game with 10 minutes, 21 seconds to go in the first when Tobin ran at the cage uncontested for his fifth of the year and Massachusetts did not trail the remainder of the way.

Massachusetts netted six of the game's opening seven goals, with two from Tobin, and held a 9-3 lead midway through as the defense held NJIT to just 12 total shots in the opening half and Sconone posted seven of his 10 stops.

After scoring the team's second goal, Procyk secured the first half hat trick with back-to-back scores at the 7:29 and 6:08 marks of the second.

Devin Spencer reached hat trick status following the break as he pushed the lead to 10-3 only 49 seconds into the third quarter. His tally sparked a six-goal run spanning the frame as Massachusetts poured in goal after goal enroute to 15-3 lead entering the fourth.

The fourth quarter featured four Minutemen recording their inaugural points with the program.

Geiger started the series with an unassisted snipe with 7:12 to play before Baugher found shooting space for his first tally as a Minuteman with 4:08 to play. Hoynes and Shuster made it a 19-7 game with back-to-back man-up scores late in the game after NJIT was assessed a two-minute locked-in penalty.

Massachusetts totaled a 57-25 lead in shots and 49-21 margin in groundballs. It also posted a 4-for-5 showing on extra-man opportunities while NJIT was 2-for-3. The Highlanders also turned the ball over 19 times to 16 by the Maroon and White.
