Makar Selected As Hockey East Defensive Player Of The Week

March 04, 2019 | Hockey

The sophomore had four points to help the Minutemen go 2-0-0 last week and clinch the program’s first-ever Hockey East regular season title.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts sophomore defenseman Cale Makar has been selected as the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. It marks the Calgary, Alberta native's fourth weekly award of the year and the 10th time a member of the Minutemen has been honored this season.

Makar had four points last week on two goals and two assists to help the Minutemen go 2-0-0 and clinch the program's first-ever Hockey East Regular Season Championship. Last Thursday at Merrimack he had a three-point night with his first power-play goal of the season, a shorthanded goal and an assist on the game winner in the 4-2 come-from behind victory over the Warriors. The assist was his 26th of the year, which set a new program single-season record for assists by a defenseman.

On Saturday, Makar led a UMass defense to a dominating 6-0 shutout of Maine as the Minutemen limited the Black Bears to just 16 shots on goal in the contest. He also added an assist for his team-leading 40th point of the season, becoming the first Minuteman to hit the 40 point plateau since 2009-10.

Makar is currently 10th in the nation in scoring at 1.21 points per-game with 13 goals and 27 assists over 33 games.

UMass will be back in action Friday, March 8, wrapping up the regular season on the road at UConn with a 7:05 matchup against the Huskies.
