Offense Explodes As Women's Lax Cruises Past Mason, 24-5

March 29, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse

Haley Connaughton ties UMass single-game record with 10 points on the day.

AMHERST, Mass. - Haley Connaughton tied the UMass single-game record with 10 points as part of an offensive explosion in the Minutewomen's 24-5 win over George Mason on Friday afternoon at Garber Field. Joining Connaughton on the leaderboard was Kaitlyn Cerasi who had a career-high six goals and tied her career-best with nine points on the day.

The win was the third straight for UMass and the seventh in the last eight outings. The Minutewomen improved to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play.

Connaughton had a career-best five goals and five assists to tie the program mark. Not lost in the career day was Emma Dotsikas who tallied five goals scoring on every shot taken. The trio accounted for 16 of the 24 goals and shot a combined 84 percent (16-of-19) in the game.

As a team, UMass shot 24-of-39 for the game (61.5 percent) and won 17-of-29 draws. In goal, Lauren Hiller picked up with win making five saves in 47 minutes of work before Gina Carroll made a pair of stops in the final 13 minutes of play.

Mason (6-5, 2-1 A-10) was led by two goals from Hailey Johnson and a goal and assist from Chachi Kelehan.

The first seven minutes of action saw a fairly close affair with UMass leading 3-2 following a Johnson goal for the Patriots.

That was the closest the action would be as the Minutewomen scored six straight goals to go up 9-2 with Connaughton and Cerasi factoring into five of them. UMass then closed out the final 6:32 of the first half with a five-goal run with Dotsikas scoring two of her goals in that span to put the Minutewomen up 14-3 at the intermission.

The second half started with the teams trading goals, but a nine-goal run for the Minutewomen spanning nearly 20 minutes put the game away. Defensively, UMass was able to hold the Patriots to just two goals in the half - one three minutes into play and the final with 31 seconds left in the contest.

UMass returns to action on Sunday afternoon as Saint Joseph's visits Garber Field. The opening draw on ESPN+ is set for 1 PM and admission is free to all.
