Recap in a Minute
Due to inclement weather, the Minutemen were limited to just one game last weekend, a 2-1 comeback victory at Central Connecticut on Sat., Feb. 23. Sophomore Luke Oliphant lifted UMass out of a 1-0 deficit in the eighth inning with a two-run single that scored freshman Luke Gutos and redshirt freshman Kane Medina. Senior Justin Lasko was outstanding in his 5.2 inning start, fanning a career-high 11 batters and allowing just one run on two hits and three walks.
Commonwealth Connections
Massachusetts head coach Matt Reynolds spent seven seasons (2008-14) as an assistant under Navy skipper Paul Kostacopoulos. In addition, three Minutemen in Matt Hosman, Daniel Livnat and Jack Pawloski either hail from the same hometown or attended the same high school as a member of the Midshipmen roster.
Welcome to the Show
Four Minutemen saw their first collegiate game action on Feb. 23, including winning pitcher Brad Collins, Luke Gutos, Kane Medina and Collin Shapiro.
Leadership Group Announced for 2019 Season
Massachusetts seniors Logan Greene and Justin Lasko as well as junior Eddy Hart will lead the squad as captains throughout the 2019 season.
Lasko Shines in Second Cape League Summer
Evan Marinofsky of the Massachusetts Daily Collegian has a story on senior Justin Lasko's two summers spent pitching in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League with the Chatham Anglers (2017) and Bourne Braves (2018). Last summer, the Stratford, Connecticut product was named a CCBL All-Star and was a co-recipient of the league's John Claffey New England Top Prospect Award.
In eight starts in the summer of 2018 with Bourne, Lasko went 3-2 with a 3.76 ERA against some of the nation's top bats. He posted 28 strikeouts in 40.2 innings of work, more than any other arm to pass through the league that year.

Summer Catch
In addition to Lasko, several Minutemen had standout summers in various leagues following the 2018 regular season. Among the highlights were Casey Aubin, Luke Oliphant and Thomas Pipolo competing in the Hamptons League, with all three being named All-Stars before Aubin and Oliphant helped the Riverhead Tomcats to the franchise's first HCBL Championship.
Just a stone's throw from Lasko on Martha's Vineyard, redshirt freshman Colin Shapiro was part of a Futures League squad that shared the league crown in August.
Massachusetts Mourns Passing of Dick Bergquist
Legendary former UMass head coach Dick Bergquist, who led the program from 1967-87, passed away on Sun., Feb. 24. Bergquist was 86 years old and is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Sonya, four children, Andrea, Carl, Craig, and Erica, as well as several grandchildren and relatives.

Harney Tabbed to Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team
Sophomore righty Sean Harney earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team laurels following his freshman season in 2018. A Natick, Massachusetts native, Harney made 12 appearances on the mound, including seven starts after earning a spot in the weekend rotation in mid-April. He finished the year 2-3 with a 3.46 earned run average and 2.53 mark against Atlantic 10 foes, the latter two of which stood atop the league's freshmen arms. In 54.2 total innings pitched, he recorded 40 strikeouts.
In five of Harney's final six starts he lasted at least 5.2 innings and, in as many outings, was responsible for two or fewer earned runs. In a Sat., April 14 matchup with Rhode Island, the right-hander took a no-hitter into the sixth inning on one of four occasions where he logged five or more strikeouts.
