Baseball Takes Doubleheader from CCSU, Navy
March 02, 2019 | Baseball
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball was victorious in both games of the team's doubleheader on Saturday at Max Bishop Stadium, taking an 11-inning contest from Central Connecticut State, 1-0, before wrapping up the day with a 3-0 decision over host Navy.
Sophomore Luke Oliphant and redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto have hit safely in all three games on the young season for the Minutemen. Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro has also reached base in each of UMass' three contests.
Following a scheduling change, the Minutemen will now close out their weekend on Sun., March 3 with a 1:30 p.m. game against Navy. The squad was previously scheduled to face Central Connecticut on Sunday; that game will no longer take place.
Game 1
Massachusetts 1, Central Connecticut 0 (11 innings)
Senior Logan Greene's one-out fly ball led to a fielding error and allowed Shapiro to come around from second base with the winning run as the Minutemen walked off in the 11th inning.
Shapiro led off the frame being hit by a pitch before a sacrifice bunt by junior Eddy Hart moved Shapiro into scoring position.
Senior Casey Aubin (1-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen, tossing the final 2.2 innings of the contest and tying a career-high with seven strikeouts. Freshman Jack Steele made his collegiate debut and dealt 2.1 scoreless innings with two Ks. Between Aubin and Steele, UMass pitching did not allow a hit and surrendered just one walk in the final five innings.
Not to be overlooked was sophomore Sean Harney's six-inning start, in which Harney recorded 10 strikeouts and scattered five hits.
The Minutemen had opportunities to seal the deal earlier in the contest, including loading the bases in the seventh and ninth, but the group was unable to capitalize.
Videtto went 2-for-5 with a walk in the day's opener. Senior Ryan Lever had a double and freshman Dylan Judd plus Oliphant each had a stolen base.
Game 2
Massachusetts 3, Navy 0
The Minutemen broke a scoreless tie with a three-run eighth inning and senior Justin Lasko (1-0) went the distance on the hill to secure the win. It was Lasko's second career complete game shutout and first since May 12, 2017.
Shapiro helped open the scoring with a little small ball, dropping down a sac bunt and reaching on a fielder's choice that allowed redshirt freshman Kane Medina to score. After a wild pitch moved both Oliphant and Shapiro into scoring position, a base hit by Hart coupled with a Videtto ground out gave the Minutemen some insurance plating Oliphant and Shapiro.
Hart had a 2-for-4 nightcap with an RBI out of the three-hole and freshman Michael Rounds (2-for-3) recorded the first multi-hit game of his career.
