Three-year letterman recognized posthumously during Sat., Dec. 14 ceremony

FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. - Sachem High School and the Sachem Alumni Association inducted former University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse defensive midfielder Eric Sopracasa into its Athletic Hall of Fame during a Sat., Dec. 14 ceremony. Sopracasa graduated from Sachem High School in 1995, redshirted his rookie season at UMass in 1996 and lettered for the Minutemen from 1997-99. Sopracasa passed away on May 5, 1999 after he was struck in the chest by a lacrosse ball during practice.

"I cannot thank the Sachem Lacrosse community and Sachem High School enough for their induction of Eric into the Sachem High School Hall of Fame," UMass head coach Greg Cannella said. "I'm so happy for Eric and the entire Sopracasa family, this is a well-deserved honor."

Sopracasa helped Massachusetts reach the NCAA Tournament in 1997 and collect 20 victories across the 1997-99 seasons. He won New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) All-Region during his redshirt junior season in 1999. His number, retired by Cannella, is prominently displayed at Garber Field alongside his photo, while a stone bench engraved with his name sits at midfield along the East sideline.

Massachusetts won each of its last two Colonial Athletic Association (CCA) Championships at Garber Field on the anniversary of his passing on May 5, 2012 and May 5, 2018.
