The Pregame Shootaround
University of Massachusetts women's basketball looks to bounce back from a season-opening loss to Merrimack as the Minutewomen welcome BIG EAST foe Providence to the Mullins Center on Sat., Nov. 9. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Need to Knows
• These teams have not met since Dec. 9, 2011 and the Minutewomen are looking to end a five-game skid against Providence. The last win for UMass was on Dec. 1, 2004–a 53-39 road triumph keyed by a 14-0 run in the final 6:29 of the game. Massachusetts' last win in Amherst over the Friars came on Dec. 12, 1994 (a 64-52 result).
• Providence opened its season at Yale on Tuesday, but in an odd twist the game was suspended at halftime due to a scoreboard malfunction. The Friars led at that time, 42-33, and the remainder of that contest will be played at a mutually-agreed date and time between the schools.
• Senior Hailey Leidel (1,360 points) now holds sole possession of 10th place on the UMass all-time scoring list and needs 45 points to tie Crystal Carroll (1993-97) for ninth with 1,405. She is also one of 17 players in program history with at least 1,000 points plus 500 rebounds.
• Those following UMass should expect to hear freshman Maeve Donnelly's name often this season as the Binghamton, N.Y. is projected to give the squad a boost in the post. Donnelly had seven rebounds in the Merrimack game on Nov. 5 and, in an exhibition vs. UMass Dartmouth (Oct. 28), pulled down 12 boards to go with nine blocks.
• A final look back at 2018-19 revealed monumental steps forward for the Minutewomen, who won 16 games for the first time since 2006-07 and reached the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals for the first time since 2005 before losing to eventual tournament champion Fordham, 73-62.
Next Up
Massachusetts heads to UMass Lowell on Thu., Nov. 14 for a 7 p.m. game at the Tsongas Center.
