Fourth Quarter Push Carries Providence Past UMass Women’s Basketball, 72-63

November 09, 2019 | Women's Basketball

Philoxy leads the Minutewomen with 15 points on 7-for-14 shooting in the setback

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball was within one possession of Providence entering the final quarter, but the Friars managed to hold off the Minutewomen in the final stanza, defeating UMass 72-63 at the Mullins Center on Saturday afternoon. The setback leaves the Minutewomen at 0-2 to start the season, while the Friars improve to 1-0.

Sophomore Destiney Philoxy led UMass with 15 points, aided by a 7-for-14 performance from the floor and grabbed five rebounds, while senior Hailey Leidel, freshman Maeve Donnelly and junior Bre Hampton-Bey contributed 11 points apiece. Donnelly hauled in a team-best seven rebounds and Leidel added five assists and four steals on the afternoon.

The Friars finished with four in double figures, including a game-high 22 points from Kaela Webb and a double-double from Mary Baskerville (12 pts, 11 rebs).

A virtually even first quarter ended with the teams embattled in a one-point game with Providence holding a 19-18 edge and both squads shooting an identical 8-for-16 in the stanza.

In the second, the Friars opened up an eight-point advantage courtesy of a 15-5 run that included nine points from Kyra Spiwak, but UMass headed to the locker room down only four at the half after back-to-back buckets from Hampton-Bey and Philoxy in the final 1:06 of the period.

The Minutewomen rallied over an eight-minute stretch of the third quarter with a 12-5 run to take a 46-45 lead with 48 seconds to go, but Providence converted four free throws to close out the frame, going into the fourth up 49-46.

UMass was within one of the Friars with 7:17 left in the contest, but a Baskerville layup at the 6:09 mark kick-started a 12-1 Providence run as the Minutewomen would draw no closer than nine the rest of the way.

UMass finished the contest shooting 40% (26-for-65), but were just 4-for-25 (16%) from beyond the arc and 7-for-10 (70%) at the free throw line. The Friars shot 43.1% (25-for-58) overall, made 9-of-20 (45%) from three and drained 13-of-15 (86.7%) from the charity stripe.

The Minutewomen will return to action on Thurs., Nov. 14, when the squad will make its first road trip of the season with a 7 p.m. matchup at UMass Lowell.
