AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team had a couple of late opportunities for an equalizer, but could not convert as Rhode Island defeated the Minutemen 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field.
The UMass attack picked things up in the second half going with the wind on a breezy afternoon, outshooting the Rams six to five over the final 45 minutes of action after being outshot two to eight in the first. The Minutemen put one of their two shots on target for the lone shot on goal in the half for either side as Benjamin Wiemann headed a ball with some pace that was saved away by URI's Stefan Schmidt.
Chandler O'Dwyer helped UMass turn up the pressure in the second half as he fired a header onto target before Christian Labeck put one of his two shots on target in the 53rd-minute.
Rhode Island broke the scoreless contest in the 78th-minute as Peder Kristiansen made a run up the left side of the field and played it to the near post for Filippo Tamburini, who headed it in for his seventh of the season.
UMass had a couple of solid scoring opportunities down the stretch as they pushed for the equalizer, beginning with a Logan Brown attempt that was blocked away by the Rhode Island defender in the 88th-minute. Labeck nearly tied things up with under 10 seconds left, sending a low-driven ball towards goal that was saved at the near post by Schmidt to seal a Rams win.
The Minutemen will continue Atlantic 10 play as they hit the road to take on La Salle on Saturday at 7 p.m. before returning home for Senior Day on Nov. 2 against Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m.
