The sophomore helped the Minutemen earn a weekend sweep against UVM, which vaulted the program back to the top spot in the national rankings.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts sophomore defenseman Cale Makar has been selected as the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season after helping the Minutemen to a sweep of Vermont last weekend, the league office announced on Monday. The pair of victories also vaulted UMass back into the top spot in the USCHO.com poll for the second time this season, while the program earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.
It marks Makar's third weekly honor this season as he was previously selected as the Hockey East Player of the Week on Oct 15. And Oct. 22 and was recognized as the Hockey East Player of the Month for October. Overall, it is the eighth weekly accolade earned by a Minuteman of the 2018-19 campaign.
In Saturday night's 5-1 victory over Vermont, Makar logged four points on two goals and two assists, factoring in four of the five tallies and tying a career single-game high in points. The Calgary, Alberta native led a defense that limited the Catamounts to just two goals and 43 shots on goal over the two-game sweep.
With Saturday's win, the Minutemen matched their 2017-18 wins totals both overall (17) and in Hockey East play (9).
UMass returns to action this Friday, Jan. 18, when the squad will open a pivotal Hockey East home-and-home series with No. 8 Northeastern in the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
