Entering his 25th year leading the program, men’s lacrosse head coach Greg Cannella earns contract extension through 2022.
AMHERST, Mass. – On the heels of winning the Colonial Athletic Association championship title and reaching the NCAA Tournament, University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse head coach Greg Cannella has been given a two-year contract extension through June 30, 2022 as announced by Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford on Wednesday.
"After a championship season for our men's lacrosse team, it was clear we needed to further our commitment to Greg and his program," said Bamford. "Aside from our team success, Greg has been an influential leader on and off the field for many alums and current Minutemen and we look forward to that continuing well in to the future."
Cannella led the Minutemen to the 2018 NCAA Tournament after winning the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season and championship tournament titles.
Entering his 25th year at the helm as the head coach and 27th overall at UMass, Cannella has a 206-142 record in 24 years and is the nation's second-longest tenured men's lacrosse coach at a Division I institution.
During his tenure, UMass has qualified for the NCAA Tournament nine times with five appearances in the NCAA Quarterfinals, reached the NCAA Final Four in 2006 as the first team from New England to play in the National Championship game and achieved a No. 1 ranking for portions of the 2012 season.
A 1988 UMass graduate, Cannella has been named CAA Coach of the Year three times, the ECAC Coach of the Year four times, and has been named the New England Coach of the Year five times. In 2006 he was the USILA National Coach of the Year after leading UMass to an NCAA championship game appearance.
This is the second straight year Cannella has received a contract extension. In June 2017, he was given a two-year extension through the 2019-20 season.
