Minutemen Drop Atlantic 10 Opener To St. Bonaventure
September 29, 2018 | Men's Soccer
UMass outshot the Bonnies by 15 shots while earning 11 more corner kicks in the league opener.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team outshot St. Bonaventure 17 to two on the afternoon but ended up dropping the Atlantic 10 opener on Rudd Field 2-1 to the Bonnies on Saturday afternoon. The Minutemen (4-4-2 Overall, 0-1-0 A-10) struck first in the 12th-minute before an own goal in the 26th-minute tied things up in a game where UMass earned 12 corner kicks to St. Bonaventure's one.
UMass put six of their eight first half shots on target, beginning with a pair of free kicks from Jack Fulton from about 20-yards away from net each. Fulton found the target from the left side of the field on each free kick attempt in the opening minutes of the contest as both were turned away with diving saves.
Eli Cronin and Casey Hamill setup Davis Smith for the opening goal of the afternoon, a shot into the bottom of the far side of the goal by Smith for his fourth goal of his sophomore campaign. Hamill and Cronin connected on a give and go prior to Cronin's cross for the goal that put UMass ahead 1-0.
St. Bonaventure (4-3-1 Overall, 1-0-0 A-10) attempted just one shot in each half, getting their first goal on a UMass own goal that deflected off the foot of a Minuteman defender and into the back of the net in the 26th-minute. The Bonnies scored again less than two minutes later by way of an Isaac Boamah goal for the final visiting shot of the half.
UMass put together three solid shot attempts in the final six minutes of the match, beginning with a Fulton look on goal that curved to the right of the post before DeAndrae Brown created another attempt from less than 10 yards out that was blocked by a defender. Perhaps the best chance for UMass came with less than a minute left as Smith sent a header just left of the goalpost.
The Minutemen will hit the road for their first A-10 game away from home this season as they head to VCU for a 7 p.m. matchup on Wednesday evening.
