Saint Joseph’s Takes Season Finale From Minutemen, 6-4
May 19, 2018 | Baseball
Evangelista and Hart homer but Hawks push across two in eighth to claim rubber game
PHILADELPHIA – Eddy Hart knotted things up at 4-4 in the eighth inning with a two-run home run to left field, but Saint Joseph's answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to hold off the UMass baseball team, 6-4, on Saturday in both teams' regular season finale at Smithson Field.
On an afternoon marked by dense fog and intermittent rain, Hart went 2-for-4 including a double, while Brett Evangelista led off his final game as a Minuteman with a solo shot over the left field fence. Nolan Kessinger also had a two-bagger of his own to wrap up the campaign with a 13-game reached base streak.
After Evangelista's early homer, Saint Joseph's came back with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Marc Giacalone popped an RBI single to bring in Brendan Hueth before the Hawks claimed a 2-1 lead on a bases-loaded walk to Liam Bendo. A fielder's choice resulted in a run for Langston Livingston and a double down the left field line off the bat of Brian Vance plated Giacalone.
That score remained until the top of the sixth, when a Logan Greene groundout cut the deficit to 4-2 as Ryan Lever came 90 feet home. Then, in the eighth inning, Kessinger went opposite field for a double as a precursor to Hart's dinger on the first pitch he saw to even the score at 4-4.
But St. Joe's would then send seven men to bat in its half of the eighth to bring the game to its final score of 6-4. Brian Markoski was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and nobody out, then David Viselli sent a Baltimore chop to the left side of the infield allowing the Hawks to add an insurance run.
Tim Brennan (9-3) earned the win out of the bullpen for SJU after dealing the final 6.2 innings. The loss went to UMass' Spencer Bergeron (0-1). Kevin Hassett made his final start with the Maroon and White, receiving a no-decision after going five innings and fanning five.
