Late Fairfield Push Leads Stags Over Baseball, 8-4
May 15, 2018 | Baseball
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Nolan Kessinger scored twice and had two RBIs via his first career home run, but a four-run seventh inning propelled Fairfield past University of Massachusetts baseball by an 8-4 score on Tuesday at Alumni Diamond. Originally scheduled for the afternoon, first pitch was pushed up to 11:30 a.m. in advance of impending weather.
Andrew Noonan went 2-for-4 to record his first career multi-hit game and both Kessinger and Logan Greene reached base for the 10th consecutive game.
The Minutemen got on the board in the top of the first with a single tally. Kessinger slapped the first pitch of the game through the right side before stealing second and taking third on an errant throw. Ryan Lever then grounded out to second, plating Kessinger and giving UMass a 1-0 lead.
Fairfield evened the score at one-apiece in the bottom half, in part helped by a pair of lucky singles. Drew Arciuolo began the frame with a dribbler fielded by Alec Norton along the third base line before Jack Gethings chopped one just past the mound. Helped by an earlier wild pitch, Arciuolo came 90 feet home when Kevin Radziewicz grounded into a double play.
After Sam Cooper retired the Stags in order in the bottom of the third, the Minutemen reclaimed the lead in the fourth. Greene began the sequence with a double into the left field corner, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Justen Voghel's sacrifice fly.
In the last of the fourth Radziewicz would come across and tie the score again, this time at two-all, when Tim Zeng put a single into center. But that quickly changed in the fifth when Kessinger once again turned on the first pitch and hit a two-run shot to right after Noonan laced his first double of 2018.
The ballgame became anew in the sixth on Drew Blake's two-run shot which moved the score to 4-4. The Stags would add four more one inning later, building a 8-4 advantage heading into the home stretch.
Peter Horn (1-2) took home the win for Fairfield while Cooper (0-4) received the loss.
Massachusetts opens a three-game Atlantic 10 series at Saint Joseph's on Thurs., May 17 at 3 p.m. from Philadelphia.
