Batting Practice
University of Massachusetts baseball opens a stretch of 11 consecutive games in New England on Tues., April 10 as the Minutemen trek to Boston College for the 2018 Beanpot Consolation Game. That matchup is scheduled for 3 p.m. at BC's Brighton Baseball Complex. Fans should be advised that this game was previously scheduled to be played at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Massachusetts.
The Maroon and White then will gear up for a Wed., April 11 home contest at Earl Lorden Field against UMass Lowell (3 p.m.) before Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island visits the Pioneer Valley from Fri., April 13 to Sun., April 15. First pitch in the URI series will take place at 3 p.m., 1 p.m. and noon, respectively.
UMass in the Beanpot
Massachusetts has taken part in the Baseball Beanpot annually since the 1996 season and is 21-21 in the tournament since that season. Against BC, the Minutemen are 5-7 with the most recent meeting coming in the 2016 Beanpot Semifinals. On that day, Ryan Lever scored the tying run in the seventh inning on a bunt by Vinny Scifo, but a two-out base hit by Joe Cronin scored Michael Strem in the eighth to put the Eagles ahead for good.
Recap in a Minute
The Minutemen were dealt a three-game sweep at the hands of Saint Louis this past weekend at the Billiken Sports Center in St. Louis. After being handed a 6-1 setback in the opening contest, SLU followed up with 11-7 and 6-2 decisions to wrap up the series. Eddy Hart clubbed his first two home runs as a Minutemen in the first two games and also joined Marcus Fry and Connor Smith in logging a double.
Massachusetts' bullpen was tasked with 11.2 innings of work throughout the series. Despite the ultimate outcome, Minutemen relievers held SLU to a .143 batting average and dealt 9.2 innings of shutout ball.
Your Destination Is On The Right
With two homers and a walk to close the SLU series, Eddy Hart is now riding an active streak of nine consecutive games reaching base. Marcus Fry closely follows Hart with an eight-game stretch.
Although Ryan Lever's career-best streak of 19 games reaching base was snapped on Sunday, it is noteworthy that the last such streak by a Minuteman was back in 2012 when Dylan Begin (22) and Tom Conley (19) reached the mark. During Lever's run he hit .338 with four doubles, 13 RBIs and a .402 on base percentage. He continues to lead UMass with a .307 batting average on the season.
Now Leaving Earl Lorden Field
Three different Minutemen in Marcus Fry, Logan Greene and Connor Smith each homered for the first time in their respective careers in the St. Bonaventure series from March 30-April 1. Greene's three-run shot came with the Minutemen down to their final out on Sat., March 31 and forced extra innings, while Smith left the yard with a solo dinger in the second inning. In the fourth inning on Sun., April 1, Fry smacked a 3-0 pitch into the trees beyond right center field to join the long ball festivities.
Call Them The Comeback Kids
In a sweep of Bucknell from March 12-14, Massachusetts was forced to come from behind in each of the three matchups. The last time the Minutemen eliminated consecutive deficits en route to a three-game series sweep was on May 8 and May 9, 2001, when UMass claimed both doubleheader tilts against Saint Joseph's (13-8 and 9-5) before posting an 11-9 triumph to close the weekend.
That year the Maroon and White won the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship after going 16-6 in the league, ultimately finishing the campaign with an overall record of 27-19.
Not To Be Confused With Brothers Osborne
The Minuteman pitching staff features one set of twin brothers in sophomores Brooks Knapek and Carter Knapek. The duo threw back-to-back in a win over Central Connecticut on Sun., March 11, with Brooks earning the win after four no-hit innings of relief, during which he struck out four and surrendered just one walk. Carter then entered for the ninth and posted his first career save. That capped a strong day on the mound for the Minutemen as Justin Lasko started on the hill, striking out five over his four innings of work.
Welcome Back, Coach
A former UMass infielder and captain, head coach Matt Reynolds returns to the Pioneer Valley after three years (2014-17) guiding Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland and seven seasons as an assistant coach at Navy (2007-14).
Prior to Navy, Reynolds served as a graduate assistant under Mike Stone at UMass for three seasons (2005-07). He played his final two collegiate seasons in Amherst after transferring from the University of Maine. He earned Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team honors in 2003 and was named the Minutemen's Most Valuable Player the following year.
On Deck
Massachusetts concludes its nine-game stretch of home contests next week, welcoming UConn (April 17), Siena (April 18) and La Salle (April 20-22) to Earl Lorden Field.
