Softball Wins Ninth Straight, Takes Doubleheader From Hawks

April 07, 2018 | Softball

The UMass offense posted double-digit hits for the eighth and ninth straight games in the doubleheader.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts softball team won their eighth and ninth straight games as they took both contests in a home doubleheader against Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon at Sortino Field. Melissa Garcia led the Minutewomen (19-10 Overall, 8-0 Atlantic 10) offense with a 6-of-6 showing at the plate with four RBI for a UMass team that has recorded 10 or more hits in nine consecutive outings.

Game One – UMass 8, Saint Joseph's 3 - Box Score
Meg Colleran won her fourth league game of the season and moved to 7-4 on the year, tossing 6.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts in game one. Colleran worked out of some early trouble to start the day as Saint Joseph's (13-17 Overall, 2-6 Atlantic 10) loaded the bases on three free passes in the first before a lineout double play to Jena Cozza at third took away the early pressure. The senior settled in, holding the Hawks without a hit until the first batter of the fourth inning.

Garcia picked up her first RBI of the day in the opening inning to put the Minutewomen on the board, sending a single to right field on a full count to bring in Cozza.

Cozza added two more runs for UMass in the second inning with a two-RBI base hit up the middle to put the Minutewomen up 3-0 after two complete. In game one, Cozza recorded one hit in her only credited at-bat, earning four free passes, including one with the bases-loaded to bring home a run after an Amy Smith RBI single scored Gimpl for the fourth run of the afternoon in the third. Smith, meanwhile, finished the opening game of the series with a 2-of-4 showing at the plate as one of two UMass hitters with a multi-hit game.

Saint Joseph's put together three unanswered runs to pull within two at 5-3 after recording their first hit off Colleran to lead things off in the fourth frame. Caela Abadie hit a two-run home run to right field in the fourth while the Hawks added their third and final run of the day in the fifth.

Kaycee Carbone extended the lead back to four runs with a two-RBI single before Garcia's second RBI of the opening game brought the score to a final 8-3.

Game Two – UMass 4, Saint Joseph's 0 - Box Score
Garcia kept it going in game two of the doubleheader, going 3-of-3 at the dish with two RBI and a walk as the Minutewomen won the second 4-0 to secure another league series. The junior opened up the scoring in the first UMass plate appearance with a two-out RBI single down the left field line to bring in Cozza.

Kiara Oliver picked up win number 10 in her first collegiate season, moving to 10-2 on the year while striking out eight in 6.0 innings of work in game two. Oliver worked around a bases-loaded situation in the top of the third inning, recording two straight outs to leave the bases juiced for the Hawks while keeping the visitors off the scoreboard.

Erin Stacevicz added the second UMass run in the following half inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Jackie Kelley before Carbone's third RBI of the day scored Cozza from second and extended the lead to three at 3-0.

Garcia capped off her perfect day at the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo shot to center field for her first home run of the season and her career as she picked up her second RBI of game two.

The Minutewomen will wrap up the three-game series against the Hawks tomorrow at noon before hitting the road for a midweek contest at Boston College on Tuesday.
