Women's Lax Earns A-10 Top Seed With 21-6 Win Over Duquesne

Minutewomen claim regular-season title after Senior Day win.
AMHERST, Mass. - Behind a senior dominant effort, the UMass women's lacrosse team claimed the Atlantic 10 regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the upcoming championship tournament with a 21-6 win over Duquesne on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. The Minutewomen conclude the regular season with a 13-4 overall record and an 8-1 mark in league play.
UMass will be playing for its 10th consecutive A-10 championship title, and 11th overall, next week at the University of Richmond from May 3-6. The Minutewomen will receive a bye to the semifinals by virtue of winning the regular-season title.
Saturday's win over the Dukes marked the final regular-season home game for nine seniors: Hannah Burnett, Ashley Faulhaber, Alex Flobeck, Kasey Keane, Kristen LoManto, Bella O'Connor, Holly Turner, Abby Walker and Sam Walters.
Turner finished the day with a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists. She enters the postseason with the UMass record for career assists (138), ranks second in career points (270), and now ranks eight in goals (132).
Burnett notched a game-high four goals, while Faulhaber and Walker each notched two scores. O'Connor finished with a goal as did LoManto who scored the first of her career on a free position in the first half. Keane posted a game-high five groundballs while causing two turnovers. Flobeck also caused a pair of turnovers and Walters started the second half making four saves.
Helping send off the seniors in winning fashion were some strong performances from underclassmen as well. Kaitlyn Cerasi tallied three goals and two assists while Kelly Marra had two goals as well. Kiley Anderson scored twice early and added an assist to go with four draw controls. Goalie Lauren Hiller earned the win with four first half saves while allowing just three goals.
Haley Matthai led Duquesne (4-12, 2-7 A-10) with three goals, while Maddie Curtis took the loss in cage making 15 saves on the day.
Overall, UMass held the bulk of possession with a 49-to-19 shot advantage. The defense forced 20 turnovers by the Dukes while the Minutewomen committed just 12 miscues. UMass also held a 31-to-14 edge in groundballs.
The Minutewomen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes and went into halftime up 13-3.
UMass scored three straight in just over three minutes of play following the intermission and closed out the game with three straight as well.
The win improved UMass to 6-0 at home this year and the Minutewomen will carry a 13-game win streak at Garber Field into the 2019 campaign.
