Defense Stellar In Women's Lax 14-4 Win Over Davidson

March 31, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse

Minutewomen pitch first half shutout, allow fewest goals of season in victory.

AMHERST, Mass. - A first half shutout highlighted a spectacular defensive effort as the UMass women's lacrosse team defeated Davidson 14-4 on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. The four goals allowed marked a season-low for the Minutewomen who improve to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play.

The win for UMass also extended its NCAA record to 56 consecutive league victories while the Maroon and White picked up their 10th straight home win at Garber Field dating back to last season.

Kiley Anderson led the UMass offense with three goals and an assist, while Hannah Burnett matched her team high four points with two goals and two assists. Hannah Palau continued her hot streak over the last three games with two goals in the win. Seven other Minutewomen notched goals in the game to round out the attack.

Defensively, Lauren Hiller made eight saves including six in the first half to hold the Wildcats scoreless in the opening stanza. Kasey Keane once again led the field defense with three groundballs and three caused turnovers. UMass forced the Wildcats into 24 miscues with 14 coming in the second half.

Davidson (6-4, 1-1 A-10) was led by Jordan Wood who had two goals and an assist. Both goals came at the beginning of the second half as the Wildcats came out of the intermission looking to cut into the 8-0 deficit.

Rose Woolson took the loss in cage making 10 saves while also collecting five groundballs and causing two turnovers.

UMass opened the game with a man-down goal from Abby Turner before methodically building on its lead throughout the first half. Palau and Turner scored back-to-back goals within a 28-second span putting the Minutewomen up 8-0 with 5:27 before halftime.

Wood scored both her goals in the first two minutes of the second half, but the Minutewomen responded with three straight goals in a nearly 90-second span to go up 11-2 with 17:22 remaining. After Brooke McDaid scored to give UMass a 14-3 lead at the 4:03 mark, Davidson closed out the scoring on a Christine Molinari goal just over two minutes later.

Overall in the game, UMass held a 29-to-18 shot advantage and committed just 16 turnovers. The Minutewomen won 10-of-19 draws and converted 19-of-21 clears while holding the Wildcats to 16-of-23 in transition.

UMass returns to action next weekend with a pair of home A-10 games as St. Bonaventure visits Garber Field on Friday (3 PM) before then hosting La Salle on Sunday, April 8 (1 PM). Both games will be streamed online via the Atlantic 10 Digital Network.
