Mason Tops Women's Soccer 1-0 At Rudd Field
October 07, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Minutewomen's unbeaten streak ends at nine straight.
AMHERST, Mass. - In a tightly contested match, George Mason made a goal in the 47th minute stand to defeat the UMass women's soccer team 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. The loss snapped the Minutewomen's nine-match unbeaten streak which was the longest since 1997.
The result drops UMass to 9-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Patriots improve to 9-5-0 overall and 4-2-0 in league action.
George Mason's goal came after a turnover in UMass' defensive third was intercepted by Emma Van Der Vorst who drove down the near side of the 18-yard box before slipping a low, sharp-angled shot towards the far post. UMass keeper Peyton Ryan cut down the angle on the near post and nearly made a diving one-handed save on the shot, but it had enough angle off the left foot of Van Der Vorst to sneak by bouncing off the post and into the goal in the 47th minute.
The goal energized the Patriots which had spent much of the first half in their defensive third. UMass held a 9-to-2 shot advantage in the opening stanza, but were unable to best Mason keeper Morgan Symmers (1 save). The Minutewomen earned several early set piece chances in the first half after fouls just outside the 18-yard box. Sini Laaksonen nearly scored off one in the 37th minute when her shot from the top of the box rang off the cross bar.
After the two sides went into intermission tied 0-0, the Patriots picked up the early momentum with Van Der Vorst's goal and then managed to limit UMass' opportunities for the balance of the match. The Minutewomen managed six shots, but Louisa Moser, who started in goal for the second half, made a pair of saves on UMass' two shots on frame.
The match resulted in a combined 42 fouls and seven yellow cards. Six of the two cards went against UMass including four in the final four minutes of play as Mason worked to possess the ball with time winding down.
UMass was able to make one final surge in the last 20 seconds of play with a flick ahead to get the ball outside the Mason 18-yard box, but the Patriots were able to kill the final five seconds by lofting the ball out of bounds.
Ryan finished the match with three saves in 90 minutes of action. UMass finished the match with a 15-to-7 shot advantage while Mason held a 6-to-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Minutewomen will head back on the road for a Thursday night match at Davidson on Oct. 11 (7 PM) before returning home to host VCU on Sunday, Oct. 14 (1 PM). The match against the Rams will serve as Senior Day for the Minutewomen. Admission is free and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
