October 12, 2018 | Women's Soccer
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Lauren Bonavita scored with 50 seconds remaining in regulation leading the UMass women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Davidson on Friday morning. The game was originally set to be played on Thursday night, but was moved due to inclement weather in North Carolina from Hurricane Michael.
The win improved the Minutewomen to 10-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Davidson falls to 2-12-0 and 0-7-0 in league play.
The result also put UMass in third place in the Atlantic 10 standings heading into Sunday's match-up at Rudd Field against second-place VCU. That match will be Senior Day for the Minutewomen who will host a special ceremony to honor the program's six seniors prior to kickoff at 1 PM.
In Friday's action, UMass jumped out to an early start with Jenny Hipp scoring her sixth goal of the season just 55 seconds into play. Julia Taffuri slotted a pass to Hipp inside the box where the sophomore was able to redirect the shot inside the near post.
The Minutewomen carried the 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Wildcats were able to equalize in the 50th minute on a goal by Gretchen Pearson.
UMass turned up the pressure from there tallying four shots and three corner kicks until Bonavita was able to find the go-ahead goal in the 90th minute.
The freshman sent a high shot on frame that was able to find its way in for Bonavita's seventh goal of the season.
Both sides finished the match with 13 shots each, while UMass held a 6-to-4 edge in corner kicks. Peyton Ryan made one save on the day for UMass, while her counterpart Sarah L'Hommedieu made two for the Wildcats.
