Doster's Equalizer Nets Women's Soccer 1-1 Draw At Fordham

October 04, 2018 | Women's Soccer

Minutewomen extend unbeaten streak to nine matches.

BRONX, N.Y. - With UMass trailing by a goal, Erin Doster scored in the 87th minute to force overtime at Fordham and an eventual 1-1 draw to stay unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play this season. The result also keeps the Minutewomen's unbeaten streak alive at nine consecutive matches as the Maroon and White improve to 9-2-1 overall and 4-0-1 in A-10 action.

The defensive-minded opening first half saw both teams go into intermission tied 0-0.

The Rams (7-5-1, 4-0-1 A-10) struck first when Amanda Miller chipped a shot from 25 yards out over UMass keeper Peyton Ryan who had charged off her line when the ball was chipped ahead. Miller connected on a lofting shot that bounced into the empty net in the 64th minute.

With just under 15 minutes to go, UMass nearly found the game-tying goal on a nice cross by Hrefna Petursdottir that found Rebeca Frisk 10 yards off the goal line. Frisk re-directed a shot on goal, but Fordham keeper Kelly LaMorte was in good position to make the save.

Doster tied the goal in the 87th minute after chasing down a booming 56-yard pass from Lauren Bonavita that allowed the senior to split three defenders. Doster lifted a 25-yard shot that arced just under the crossbar inside the top-left corner for the equalizer.

The Minutewomen nearly found the game-winner with just over a minute to go in regulation on a hard strike by Kelly Marra that was saved by LaMorte.

The first overtime saw Sini Laaksonen and Bonavita each have a pair of shots for UMass while the defense kept Fordham at bay. Laaksonen had another in the second overtime that was just high off frame.

Fordham was nearly able to capitalize late in the second half with under five minutes remaining after a corner kick service was loose inside the six-yard box with both teams vying for possession. After glancing off a Fordham player, Ryan was able to smother the ball to end the danger.

Overall in the match, UMass held a 13-to-7 shot advantage, while the Rams held a 4-to-3 edge in corner kicks. Ryan finished the evening with four saves, while LaMorte made three.

The Minutewomen will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 7 against George Mason at Rudd Field. Kickoff is set for 1 PM and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
